Duke of Windsor's kilt to be
auctioned
Duke of Windsor's kilt to be auctioned - 24/03/2010
A 1930s kilt once owned by the Duke of Windsor is to be sold at auction, it has been revealed. The rare piece of royal memorabilia was handed to one of the Duke's entourage, who himself passed it on and whose nephew has now put the piece up for sale, according to the Times.
Charles Hanson, auctioneer and regular fixture on the BBC's Bargain Hunt, identified the garment as being one of historical note.
He told the news provider: "As the tartan was unwrapped, I recognised the two-way colour scheme as a royal tartan.
"The social history of the kilt is remarkable. To handle such a garment of great royal pedigree is exciting."
The kilt will go on sale at Hansons Antiques in Derby tomorrow (March 25th). While it has been given a presale estimate of £500, the item's royal heritage could see the guide price surpassed.
King Edward VIII abdicated from the throne in 1936.
