Fourth plinth hopefuls unveiled - 19/08/2010
The six artists still in the running to put their artwork on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar square have revealed their proposals. Some of the proposals include a Battenberg cake, a blue cockerel and a brass sculpture of a boy on a rocking horse.
The theme for the works is wit and subversive humour hence the oddity of the pieces.
London-based Brian Griffiths is the artist who came up with the Battenberg cake, which is an outsized sculpture of the sponge made from Victorian, Edwardian and contemporary bricks.
Ekow Eshun, chairman of the Fourth Plinth Commissioning Group, told BBC News: "All good art stimulates debate. We hope that the public will enjoy the exhibition and will share their thoughts with us."
The public will be able to see the artwork being displayed until October 31st in St Martins in the Church square and the piece that will be adorning the fourth plinth in 2012 will be announced next year.
Other proposals include a mountainscape with Britain's outline displayed at its base, an organ that chimes every time someone uses a cash machine installed in the plinth, and a replica of Sir George White's statue covered in jewels.
