Josef Mengele's diary up for sale - 02/02/2010
A diary kept by the notorious Nazi doctor Josef Mengele is to be sold at auction in the US. The item, which chronicles a number of the physician's post-war years, is expected to fetch a minimum of £40,000. Nazi memorabilia collectors are likely to push the price up.
Mengele worked in the infamous Auschwitz where he was responsible for the murder of thousands of people.
His position as one of the camp's doctors also saw him use inmates as guinea pigs for "scientific" experiments, with the man being nicknamed the "Angel of Death" and "Beautiful Devil" by camp detainees.
While the diary does not directly cover these times, he muses over matters relating to Nazism.
A particularly chilling excerpt relates to the necessary extermination of the "lesser races" before revealing how proud he is of himself for saving a cow trapped in mud.
Josef Mengele lived out his years in South America, having escaped there after WWII. He was 67-years-old when he died and left no evidence of remorse for his atrocities.
