Scottish paintings make over £1 million - 17/08/2010
Bonhams annual Scottish Sale has made £1.25 million on its first morning today (August 17th).Highlights of the auction include several still-lifes by Anne Redpath OBE including the 1937 Still Life with Michaelmas Daisies, which sold for £134,000.
Cagnes, by the same artist, fetched £114,000 against a top estimate of £80,000.
Redpath was born in 1895 and her vivid domestic still-lifes are among her best-known works. She married architect James Michie and is the mother of Alastair Michie – a painter and sculptor.
Another high-selling piece at the auction was a still life by George Leslie Hunter, which made £144,000.
An iconic painting of Iona by Samuel John Peploe also exceeded expectations and sold for £86,000.
Chris Brickley, head of pictures at Bonhams Edinburgh, said: "This was a very strong sale with good quality works.
"I'm particularly pleased to see the Redpaths doing so well and getting the recognition which her talent deserves."
In total, 86 per cent of the works sold by lot and 94 per cent sold by value, making over £1.25 million.
