Tennis star to hold eBay auction - 20/01/2010

Female tennis star Serena Williams is holding an auction on the internet marketplace eBay to raise money for the people of Haiti, it has been revealed.

A selection of personal items and memorabilia will make up the collection of lots.

It is hoped a total of US$92,000 (£56,500) can be raised, with the proceeds going to the earthquake victims as well as a collection of schools and charities in the US.

The figure of US$92,000 ($56,500) has been chosen as a result of its correlation with the amount of money the tennis player had to pay out after a foul-mouthed outburst during a tennis match last year.

Ms Williams said: "The purpose of the mission is to turn a negative into a positive by educating and helping women, men and children so that they have a fighting chance."

The auction, which runs for a total of 92 days, will put new items on offer every week.
