Titian portrait going under the hammerChristie's is selling more than 2,000 lots from the Collection of the late John Appleby, an art connoisseur from Jersey, in a series of sales from July until November.

The auction house expects to realise £2 to £3 million from the objects, which range from the 16th to the 20th century.

Christie's first sale of the collection started on July 6th and continues today (7th).

Old Master and 19th Century Paintings, Drawings and Watercolours Evening and Day sales is taking place in King's Street.

One of the highlights is a Portrait of a Gentleman, which has been attributed to 16th century artist Titian. It is estimated to reach between £200,000 and £300,000.

Titian or Tiziano Vecelli was born in Italy and his exact birth date is unknown. He was known as the most important member of the 16th century Venetian school.

His subjects included portraits, landscapes and religious and mythological characters.
