Inlaid panel depicting a scene from the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám, Indian, C20th

A hardwood, possibly rosewood, panel with a simple frame surrounding a panel with detailed inlaid wood decoration depicting a young couple in a stylised garden scene, the man holding a book in his right hand and a cup in his upraised left hand, the lady playing a musical instrument. Similar plaques have a small ivory white tablet at the bottom with script wording of one of the quatrains, or four line verses, from the ‘Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám’ translated from Persian to English in the nineteenth century by Edward FitzGerald and then published in many other editions, often illustrated. Omar Khayyam (1048–1131) was a Persian poet and polymath, known for his contributions to mathematics, astronomy, philosophy, and Persian literature. Poetry in the form quatrains (rubāʿiyāt) is attributed to him but not with any degree of certainty. Fitzgerald’s translation, though, made his work popular in the English speaking world, and its musings on life, love and death have provoked intense discussion as to their meaning and significance.

The most famous quatrain of all reads

“A Book of Verses underneath the Bough, A Jug of Wine, a Loaf of Bread—and Thou Beside me singing in the Wilderness— Oh, Wilderness were Paradise enow!”

and it is perhaps not too fanciful to see this composition as an illustration of this, the wine and bread to be seen on the tray at the bottom left.

The skill of the craftsman here is self evident with a wide choice of woods assembled in intricate detail and complemented by the deeply grained dark hardwood of the background and frame. The work is Indian and probably dates to the later years of the twentieth century.
