LOT NUMBER 20
Japanese Kyoto small Jar and Cover, early C20th
A small earthenware jar and cover, the body of squat baluster form with a flaring foot and the domed cover with a pointed knob finial, decorated all over with a rich and densely painted design of floral blooms including chrysanthemum and peony in polychrome enamels and gilt, a version of the Chinese millefiori pattern, the top rim and finial gilt and the foot with a repeating geometric design, the interior with a lightly crackled cream glaze and the base with a square two character mark in iron red.The celebrated potteries at Kyoto in Japan produced pieces very similar in style to the well known Satsuma wares of which this is an excellent example. The decoration relied much less on the use of raised enamel work, but the quality of the painting could sometimes be very similar. Dating here is at the beginning of the Taisho period (1912-1926) and the piece was doubtless made as cabinet display item for export. The mark, which is found on other pieces, probably is probably for the workshop where it was made.
