Pair of Chinese Ginger Jars decorated Birds and Flowers, late C20th

A pair of Chinese ceramic ginger jars of typical ovoid globular form with a short straight neck decorated in polychrome enamels with birds amidst trailing peony on a matt lime green ground with craquelure effects, the bases each with a circular mark in iron red, one with the numbers ‘141’. The look of this pair is more European than Eastern but the finish of the base suggests production in China and similar examples can be found marked ‘Fabricado em Macau’ (‘Made in Macau’) and Macau was indeed a centre for the manufacture of ceramics from the sixteenth century onwards, continuing production well into the twentieth with an emphasis towards the end on souvenirs for tourists. The style of decoration tended to be more heavily influenced by Western techniques and motifs which explains the more hybrid decoration of this pair, not without a certain charm in itself. Dating is most likely towards the end of the twentieth century.
