LOT NUMBER 28
Pair of Framed Watercolours, landscape scenes, signed W.A.Bettesworth circa 1900 (the frames later)
A complementary pair of elegant watercolours depicting landscape scenes, one by a river and the other in a park, both with a Mother and child in nineteenth century dress. The second is labelled Chesham Boix (for Chesham Bois, a village in the Chiltern Hills, in Buckinghamshire, England, adjacent to both Amersham and Chesham) but the first is not identified. Both are signed ‘W. A. Bettesworth’ who is known from another watercolour, also a countryside scene with a Mother and child, said to have been exhibited in 1906. Bettesworth, then, seems to have been an accomplished late nineteenth century watercolour artist. Certainly, his skill is evident here. Both pictures carry the name of the framers ‘Marble Hill Gallery’, now no longer trading, and the format of the telephone number, which begins with ‘01’ indicates a date for the frames before 1990.Size: | 46.2cm x 37.8cm (overall), 30.3cm x 21.5cm (watercolours) |
Weight: | 2.9kg (the two) |
Date: | c1900 (the frames later) |
Condition: | Good condition, no issues |
Estimate: | £80 – 120 |
