Murano Glass figure of a Clown, mid C20th
This is an outstanding example of the glass clown figures made by the glassworks at Murano, Venice and still in production today. While copied by other manufacturers, the true Murano pieces are distinguished by the quality and inventiveness of their execution as can be seen here. This clown figure is modelled standing, wide black booted feet apart, with a multicoloured body enclosed by a blue scarf, his white gloved hands clenched and his smiling face above a high red collar. Attached to his chest is a blue glass hollowed centre object perhaps intended as a flower holder with the possibility that the hands could be used for the same purpose. The glass blowing techniques employed, particularly the ‘sommerso’ like patterning to the body, are complex confirming the identity of the maker. The earliest clown figures are ascribed to the 1970s and this example is most likely one of them. Surviving in pristine condition it is truly a ‘must have’ for collectors of Murano glass, let alone anyone with a taste for decorative amusement.Size: | Ht 22cm, Width (max) 13 cm |
