LOT NUMBER 19
Carved oak wood Box, possibly German, late C19th
A light brown oak wood box with a hinged lid, the interior lined in blue velvet and the lid with a mirror inset inside, the exterior deeply carved with panels of leaves on a textured ground, the lid in addition with a repeating geometric pattern border, the corners with dovetail joints clearly visible. The work on this attractive box is clearly European (there are other similar examples from India and China) and the naturalistic motifs suggest German work in the well known ‘Black Forest’ tradition which exploited woodland themes including animals. Dating is most likely to the late nineteenth century and this piece well retains its attraction today.| Size: | Width 24.2cm, Depth 19.5cm, Ht (max) 13cm |
| Weight: | 1.135kg |
| Date: | Late C19th |
| Condition: | Good condition generally; slight scratches to the interior top edges, mirror silvering slightly defective in places, interior velvet stained/worn, base leatherette finish mainly missing with a later damaged felt covering, key missing. |
| Estimate: | £50 – 80 |
