Egyptian Revival tooled leather Clutch Bag, mid C20th
A brown leather clutch bag with tooled decoration of typical form, the front flap, with a popper fastening, folding over to cover the concertina interior which has three sections, one zipped, two strap fastened pockets to the bottom and a mirror set into the upper section. In addition, there is light brown stitching at the top, visible inside. The designs are classic ‘Egyptian Revival’ with a bust of Queen Nefertiti (named, and accompanied by hieroglyphs) surrounded by stylised palm leaves at the front and another bust of her in a diamond frame shape inside. The back of the bag has a coloured design depicting a rocky lakeside scene with pyramids in the distance, rather an idealised composition. Similar bags in a variety of forms seem to have been made in the 1940s as tourist souvenirs and this example survives in excellent condition given its age.| Size: | 25cm x 15.5cm x 2.5cm |
| Weight: | 410gm |
| Date: | 1940s |
| Condition: | Good condition generally, the mirror loose and with slight loss to the silvering |
| Estimate: | £20 – 30 |
