Novelty matchstick holder, Boot with Cat and Dog, probably Japan 1950s

A novelty ceramic matchstick holder in the form of a black boot, unlaced, with a dog climbing towards a cat seated on top, the sole glazed brown with an impressed mark '3'. Some other examples of these have a printed mark 'Japan’ in black and it may be that this has simply worn off here. Certainly the work and design is so similar that Japanese manufacture is almost certain; they produced many ‘novelty’ ceramic pieces for export after the war, marked at first ‘Made in Occupied Japan’ and then, after 1952, ‘Made in Japan’ or ‘Japan’. Usually the painted decoration flakes off, whereas here it remains in excellent condition.
