Two similar Chinese Mille Fleur pattern plates, mid C20th

Two porcelain plates of typical form with a shallow well and a flat rim, richly decorated to the front in ‘Famille Rose’ enamels with densely arranged floral blooms (peony, chrysanthemum, lotus) on a gold ground, the reverse plain and one with an apocryphal four character mark in iron red reading ‘Qianlong Nian Zhi’ (Made in the Qianlong period). This sumptuous floral design, often termed ‘mille fleur’ (thousand flowers) was developed by the Chinese in the mid eighteenth century (Qianlong period 1736-1795) and employed for the next two hundred years or more. The paste of the foot rim and the slightly garish finish of the gilding suggest mid twentieth century work here (the Qianlong mark is wildly optimistic!) but both the plates are as well painted as some of their predecessors and make a highly decorative ensemble.
