Pair of French Blue Ground Square Vases Choisy Le Roi, late C19th

A Pair of Vases of squared baluster form with flaring necks and short spreading feet, the mazarine blue glaze decorated in thickly applied enamels with a central design of birds nesting on flowering branches with insects hovering, surrounded by three panels of flowering branches, the central design also highlighted in gold. One of the vases with a stamped triangular mark, slightly indistinct but doubtless reading 'HB' 'Choisy' for the French ceramics factory Choisy Le Roi. Faience pottery was first produced in Choisy-le-Roi, France, in 1804. By 1836, the factory came under the management of Louis Boulenger who was succeeded in 1863 by his son Hippolyte Boulenger. By that time, the factory had some three hundred employees. Much of the production was of majolica pieces whose quality matched that of the major British manufacturers. When marked, the pieces bear a stamped ‘Choisy le Roi’ or ‘Choisy’ impression and and may include the letters 'HB' which presumably stands for Hippolyte Boulenger. Blue glazed pieces with gilt and enamel decoration are found and this is what we have here, the narrrow elegant form suggesting pieces suitable for the mantel piece. Dating is probably to the end of the nineteenth century.
