Set of four prints, Ladies of Fashion, Christel Marrot, signed, mid C20th
Christel Marrot (1919-1992), known throughout Denmark as Christel for short, was a Danish cartoonist, painter, illustrator and sculptor (see image 15). In 1939 she began to work with the weekly magazine Søndags-B.T. with which she remained on a contract for the rest of her life as well as working for other magazines in Denmark and abroad. Her output was prolific and included book illustration, designs for porcelain figurines made by Royal Copenhagen and clothing and shoes. Her style was distinctive blending the playful with the gently erotic and her images of young ladies, done in the 1960s and 1970s are one of the best examples of her work and are seen vividly here in this set of four prints which carry her signature. The young lady with a child is typical of her more whimsical, slightly retrospective work, but the other three ‘fashion ladies’ are very much of their time with the portrait head being, perhaps, the most distinctive of all. Christel wrote of her drawings that they ‘contained a large element of fashion and new style at a time when girls looked dreadful in the clothes that they could buy, as no-one had yet bothered to invent women's everyday fashion’.| Size: | Frames : 17.8cm x 23.8cm Prints : 16.3cm x 22.3cm |
