Abstract form stoneware Vase, Mourne Grange, signed, probably late C20th

This is certainly a ‘one off’ creation with no parallels whatsoever. Made from rugged stoneware, which can be clearly seen underneath, a conical base, ridged and pierced at the bottom with four sets of four holes, is surmounted by an onion shaped neck, also ridged, with raised bands above and below. The speckled glaze, which is almost slightly tenmoku like, employs a wide variety of colours, light brown, grey green and black which merge and blend with one another. Just possibly some sort of incense burner is intended but this is far from certain. The incised mark at the base ‘Mourne Grange’ at least gives the origins of this piece. Mourne Grange is a community centre located at Kilkeel, Co Down, Ireland, established in 1971, which provides care services for people with learning disabilities and other support needs. Craft workshops are part of the programme and there is an online shop selling items made by some of the residents. Although perhaps never offered for sale on the open market, this vase must be one of the objects made there and it advertises the location rather than the name of its maker. Something of a mystery piece, then, but with considerable attraction nevertheless.
