Abstract organic form Vase, Brenda Piper, Acorn Pottery, signed, late C20th

A stoneware vase of ovoid form with a short slender concave neck, the cream mottled glazed body with three looping raised bands in brown and the neck also glazed in brown, the flat base unglazed with an impressed mark ‘BP’ partially obscured by a gilt label for ‘Brenda Piper’, ‘Acorn Pottery’. There is an entry for Brenda Piper in ‘British Studio Potters’ Marks’ by Eric Yates-Owen and Robert Fournier (2nd edition 2005 p401) but little is known about her. She worked at her Henley studio from 1987-1990 and the form of her signature mark changed after 1990 giving a very secure dating here. Other pieces by her display a variety of semi abstract organic forms which is consistent with the design of this vase although its exact significance remains rather unclear.
