French faience style amphora form Vase marked Squire Noyers, late C20th

A studio pottery vase made in the faience style, the body of amphora form with lug handles to the neck, decorated in imitation of a Spanish hispano-moresque wares with a design of overlapping feathers in blues and greens, outlined in brown, the base glazed brown and with a cream scroll form panel containing the words ‘Squire’ ‘Noyers’. While retrospective in both its form, the type of glaze and the style of decoration, this vase is of relatively recent date and appears to come from the pottery studio ‘A&C Squire’ created by Andy and Claire Squire in 1994 at Noyers, a picturesque village in North Central France (see image XXXX). Their website (www.poterie-squire.com) details their use of red earthenware clay to form pieces inspired by ‘folk, medieval, and Moorish art’ which exactly explains what we have here. Pieces in similar colourings and designs are available to purchase today, but nothing like this vase, suggesting that it was one of their earliest and possibly experimental productions. This may explain why the mark differs from that found on their later pieces which also includes their initials and the date of their establishment. If so, it is the precursor to a range of ceramics which enjoys great popularity today.
