LOT NUMBER 19
Primitive studio pottery Flask and Cover, signed, possibly Allison Weightman, C20th
This is a primitive, almost rustic, stoneware flask and cover the body of rounded flattened ovoid form with a short neck and the stopper of an ill defined shape with notching at the top, matt glazed in browns and mustard with scratch pattern decoration and three irregular bands of splash glaze at the shoulder centre and base in blues, greens and browns, the glaze at the bottom dripping over onto the unglazed base and with an impressed mark. The mark seems to resemble that of the potter Allison Weightman (born 1963; see image 11) who specialises in decorative wares in raku, stoneware and porcelain and also sculptural wall pieces, for which this might have been a test piece since nothing else like it seems to be on the market at the moment. The illustration of her mark, which apparently resembles impressed sheep vertebrae at ‘British Studio Potters’ Marks’ by Eric Yates-Owen and Robert Fournier (2nd edition 2005 p526) very closely resembles what we have here (see image 10) and while apparently ‘one off’ this flask is consistent with other pieces by her which have been described as follows ‘Allison creates hand-built vessels and forms that relate to her love of the natural environment. The rich depths to her glazes are achieved through her development of multi-layering and multi-firing the work she produces.’ (Edinburgh Design School website).| Size: | Ht (overall) 15.2cm (flask) 13.5cm, Stopper 2.8cm, Width (max) 6.8cm, Depth (max) 5cm, Base 4.2cm x 3.5cm (max) |
