LOT NUMBER 26
Studio Pottery Vase with Cizhou style glaze, signed JE possibly for John Egerton, C20th
A studio pottery vase, stoutly potted, the body of broad pear shape form below a columnar neck with a stepped rim, richly glazed in browns and mustard colourings with speckle effects, the base unglazed and with an incised mark ‘JE’. The glaze effects here look strongly towards Chinese Cizhou wares with their tones of brown, a frequent source of inspiration for British studio potters. The initials underneath may possibly stand for John Egerton (1940-2024) who established a studio in Scarborough in 1965. See ‘British Studio Potters’ Marks’ by Eric Yates-Owen and Robert Fournier (2nd edition 2005 p153) where a very similar mark is illustrated and many others of Egerton’s pieces share the distinctive ‘E’ seen here, even if the rendering of the ‘J’ can be different. If this vase is by him, it would most likely be a fairly early work since he went on to adopt rather different techniques in later years moving away from the ‘classic’ studio pottery designs and styles.| Size: | Ht 24.5cm, Width (max) 12cm, Base 7.2cm |
