Orange tango glass Vase, possibly Loetz, Czechoslovakia , 1920s/1930s

The term ‘tango glass’ is thought to have been created by the famous glassworks Loetz to describe a range of pieces in a single colour given applied decoration in another contrasting colour, some of which are associated with the designer Michael Powolny (1871-1954). They seem to date from the 1920s onwards but the range was so popular that it was rapidly copied by other Czech firms, in particular Franz Welz, but unfortunately it is also still copied today and there are many poor quality modern reproductions on the market. A version of the shape and decoration which we have here, an orange beaker vase with a flaring wavy rim with black applied decoration and a snake coiling around the body, was indeed made by Franz Welz in the 1930s and apparently appears in their pattern books, but the foot is completely different, just spreading out in a platform like base, and the proportions are much more slender. The quality of the glass here, its minor imperfections to the surface (see image 2) and the more ‘stocky’ proportions with an elaborately formed base and a hand finished foot (see image 6) suggest something a bit earlier and that this therefore may perhaps be a Loetz original. There is no certainty here but the skill in its manufacture and the decorative appeal make this an interesting piece for collectors of Czech art glass to consider.
