Rococo style gilt metal picture frame and antique photo tissue cover by Percy Lund & Co, 1890s/1920s
A gilt metal picture frame with a hinged supporting strut at the back, the sides, top and bottom with elaborately cast stylised floral decoration in the rococo style, the border of the frame with rosettes and repeating geometric designs, the top stamped to the reverse ‘08576’.These rather florid picture frames, with decoration imitating the eighteenth century rococo style, were probably made in France in the early twentieth century, although they are sometimes dated earlier and the American firm Jennings Brothers of Bridgport, Connecticut is also suggested. While attractive in itself, this frame is rather more interesting for the fact that it contains a tissue with a design of two children on a beach in blue with the wording underneath ‘PERCY LUND & CO BRADFORD (56)’. Percy Lund (1863-1943) was born in Bradford from where he ran a highly successful business producing and selling photographic accessories and publications. Amongst these was the tissue cover used to protect carte de visite and cabinet photos. The top edge of the tissue would be pasted to the back of the card and then folded over to cover the photograph on the front. Lund and Co produced a variety of designs for these and image 11 shows two of them, with the prices, including the one we see here. Fragile and dispensable, these tissue covers seem not to have survived in great quantity making this a desirable acquisition for the collector of photographic memorabilia.
