Archibald Knox gold bar Brooch with opal stone, marked MB & Co, c1910

This is a lovely small bar brooch designed by Archibald Knox in the typical Celtic style for Murrle Bennett & Co. It is 9K gold and set with a fine opal stone with impressed marks to the reverse 'MB&CO', '9CT'. Murrle Bennett & Co was a prestigious Anglo-German jewellery manufacturer which operated in London between 1884 and 1914 specialising in the contemporary Art Nouveau and Arts & Crafts designs. Many of their pieces were sold by Liberty & Co and they worked with famous designers of the day including Archibald Knox who had, of course, himself firm associations with Liberty's. The design of this brooch is near iconic with an interlinked 'knot' pattern surrounding the central opal stone. It survives in excellent condition and is fully marked making it a highly desirable acquisition for collectors of Knox jewellery.
