Bronze sculpture, Diana with a Deer, Zoltan Kovatz, signed, first half C20th
A bronze sculpture, brightly patinated, of a naked woman, her head turned to the right, accompanied by a deer with a stylised tree bark support at the back, mounted on a square marble base, the reverse with a cast signature ‘Z.Kovatz’.Zoltan Kovatz (1883-1952) was a Hungarian born sculptor who worked in many countries, including his own, and died in France to which he moved in his later years (see image 9). He was known for Art Deco style figures, both in bronze and terracotta, of which we have here a typical example. The composition suggests the classical Goddess Diana and that is the name usually given to editions of this piece. Alternatively it is sometimes described as ‘Femme à la biche’ (‘biche’ being the French for ‘doe’). Many of his 1930s pieces were cast by the foundry ‘Editions Reveyrolis’ in Paris which may be the case here (certainly the marble plinth looks French and the format of the signature appears on many of his works made by the firm), although there are no marks to prove this. The style though is quintessentially Art Deco and this finely modelled piece almost certainly dates from that era.
