LOT NUMBER 64
Ottoman silver filigree Box, C19th
A silver box and hinged cover of rectangular form, the lid with three stylised floral heads and the base with four similarly formed feet, the cover handle in the shape of two confronting ‘S’ scrolls, the whole with fine and detailed quality filigree openwork with scrolling and heart shape designs. As often with these boxes, there are no markings here to help identification and the ascribed provenances can vary to include Russia and India, but the most likely country of origin here is Turkey and this box is an extremely fine example of the Ottoman silversmiths’ art. The quality of the work speaks for itself and the box which probably dates to the nineteenth century has survived in excellent condition.
