LOT NUMBER 67
Ottoman silver marriage Mirror, Turkey, marked 900 BEDO, early C20th
A circular mirror mounted in silver with a lobed edge and decorated to the reverse with a fine repousse work design of rose head blooms surrounding a chrysanthemum flower within stylised scrolling foliage with further floral blooms and surrounded by a border of fan shape devices, all on a chased hammer punched ground of small circles. There are marks '900' for the silver purity and 'BEDO' for the maker. The mirror itself is framed by a simple border with stylised shells and flower heads again on a hammer punched ground. These mirrors, small and with finely worked designs in silver, were a traditional aspect of the Turkish marriage ceremony where they are given by the groom to the bride as part of a dowry, then to be hung in the home for good luck, usually turned around with the reverse facing front during prayer ceremonies. This is a fine example of the type with high quality craftsmanship and most likely dates to the early twentieth century.
