Oval cut glass pin tidy with silver lid, William James Myatt & Co, hallmarked Birmingham 1925

An oval glass pin tidy or trinket box, the walls with a cut glass design of stylised scrolling foliage and flowers, the top rim stepped to fit the silver lid which has a plain countersunk top with hallmarks to the side.

This pin box shape was principally made between 1900 and 1930 and the hallmark here dates it to 1925. The maker’s mark ‘WJM&CO stands for William James Myatt & Co, prominent silversmiths based in Birmingham who also had premises in Hatton Garden and even for a time Berlin. Founded in 1895, by 1914 they had around 400 employees and at the 1912 Jewellers' Exhibition, they showcased a selection of around 250 brush and mirror and over 600 photograph frame designs. Severely bombed during the war, they continued production afterwards but moved away from silverwares, finally ceasing to trade in the mid 1950s.
