Pewter Trinket Box and Cover, Just Andersen, Denmark, signed, early C20th

A pewter trinket box and cover of circular form, the shallow base with curved sides and the low domed lid with a bead border, the surface hammer decorated and the knob in the shape of a stylised flower, the underside with marks ‘JUST’ in an inverted triangle, ‘DENMARK’, ‘791’, ‘DENMARK (slightly obscured).

This box is by the well known Danish designer Just Andersen (1884-1943), see image 7, whose mark appears underneath. After training as a silversmith at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, in 1918 Andersen established his own workshop, Just Andersen Pewter, producing decorative art objects and jewellery. His designs were heavily influenced by the Art Deco styles of the 1920s and 1930s and enjoyed great popularity but his earliest pieces look backwards as well and there is an element of ‘Arts and Crafts’ design in this box, particularly the hammered decoration and bead border of the lid, which was probably made soon after his studio opened.
