Silver serving Spoon with monogram, Lily Pattern, Whiting Manufacturing Co, marked, 1902

A silver serving spoon, the ovoid bowl with an elaborately decorated handle of high relief flowering lilies, a small plain panel towards the top with the monogram ‘D’, the reverse with the marks ‘STERLING’, a small griffin clutching a ‘W’ in a circle with its right front paw, ‘PAT. 1902’, ‘W’ ‘D’ (?) ‘100’.

The griffin mark seen here is for the Whiting Manufacturing Co, an American firm of silver manufacturers dating back to 1840 and originally based in North Attleboro, Massachusetts but relocated to New York in 1875 after their factory there burnt down. Whiting’s output was relatively small concentrating on fine quality handmade silverware with an emphasis on Japanese inspired and aesthetic movement designs of which this spoon is an excellent example. In 1924, the firm was absorbed by the Gorham manufacturing company who continued to produce their designs under the Gorham-Whiting name. This spoon, with its engraved monogram, was undoubtedly a bespoke commission and perhaps part of an original set or service. The Lily pattern was one of the most famous of Whiting’s designs and accurately reflects the fashions in vogue when it was made.
