LOT NUMBER 26
Chinese four panel Table Screen with embroidered silk panels, signed and with box, C20th
A fine quality table screen each of the four panels made from rosewood, joined with brass hinges and set with glazed delicately embroidered silk panels, the first panel with a seal character signature. Small screens with four or six panels, usually termed table screens, were made for export by the Chinese in fairly large quantities in the twentieth century, but mostly the panels display paintings on silk. Embroidered pieces are much less common and the fine silk embroidery seen here is much less common and of excellent quality. The composition is a linked design of two birds amidst flowering prunus or plum blossom. The colourings are mostly greens and browns with the addition of light purple for the flowers. The first panel has a six character seal mark signature which may indicate the artist or be a mark of commendation. The screen comes with its original silk fabric covered box with two bone clasp fasteners and probably dates to the mid twentieth century. It is highly attractive and an example of later Chinese export work at its best. A restful distraction for the scholar at work!Size: | Screen panel : 27cm x 9.5cm, Screen fully extended : 39.6cm, Box : W 29.5cm, D 12cm, H 7.5cm |
