LOT NUMBER 27
Japanese red lacquer Box and Cover with inset bone plaque, late C19th
A Japanese lacquer box and cover, the base and lid decorated with a design of massed peony and chrysanthemum heads in red lacquer and the lid inset with an irregularly shaped carved and coloured bone plaque depicting a garden terrace scene with peony, a butterfly and rocks, within an irregularly shaped, diaper design brown lacquer border. The interior with a contemporary paper lining. The style of the lacquer work, slightly less deeply cut and a darker colour, the decorative elements used, with an emphasis on chrysanthemum, and the employment of bone decoration suggest here Japanese, rather than Chinese, work made for export and the paper lining of the interior, not often found in Chinese lacquer boxes, conforms with this. Dating is probably to the end of the nineteenth century and the combination of materials used is rather unusual making this an accessory both decorative and functional.Size: | 21.5cm x 17.5cm x 5cm |
