LOT NUMBER 35
Pair of Italian Art Deco style alabaster Bookends in the shape of books, first half C20th
This is an attractive pair of bookends that are worked into the shapes of books, three standing on a fourth. The bases have green felt coverings, probably original. The stone chosen, with its mottled brown colourings, perfectly imitates the look of old, leather bound volumes and is much less commonly found than the lighter colourings. Italy is one of the main sources of alabaster and many examples in this format have labels denoting that country of origin suggesting the provenance here. With their angular lines, these bookends are obviously Art Deco in style but are likely actually to have been made during that period. The carving is a bit ‘heavier’ than on many other examples and even the shape of the books themselves with their angular inset detail to the top and sides has the feel of the era. Decorative in themselves, they would be a highly practical addition to the study or office!Size: | Each 14cm x 9cm x 9cm |
