LOT NUMBER 34
Trinket box in the shape of a bound Book, onyx and brass, Austria, first half C20th
This is an unusual trinket box comprising two heavy onyx slabs, fitted with brass which has been cast in the form of a book's spine, pages and clasps. The brass has been patinated to give a more 'olde world' look. There are four small ball form feet to the base and a stamped mark 'AUSTRIA' to one of the sides. Other similar examples are known and many are marked with the country of origin. Great skill was needed to combine bronze fitments which required the drilling fixing holes with the potentially fragile onyx slabs and these boxes must have been luxury items in their day. The style has a hint of ‘Arts and Crafts’ on the one hand and ‘Art Deco’ on the other suggesting a dating to the 1920s when Vienna itself was in the grip of the ‘secessionist’ movement.Size: | 16cm x 11cm x 6.5cm |
