Victorian Bronze Chamber Candlestick in the form of a Griffin, probably English, second half C19th
This is a very striking bronze chamber stick in the form of a griffin with fine detail to the casting of the face and feathers and a screw fitting to allow the angle of the head and candleholder to be adjusted. The griffin is a well known legendary creature with the body, tail, and back legs of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle. Griffins were known as the guardians of treasures and priceless possessions even in Classical antiquity and were to become familiar elements of heraldry. The choice of this creature as the support for a candlestick (the form suggests a chamber candlestick) cannot be easily explained. Does the griffin here protect its owner in some way? Whatever the answer the result is a striking decorative ensemble from the antique which could well enhance many a contemporary domestic interior. The work here is most likely English and dateable to the mid to late nineteenth century when the 'Gothic Revival' style was in fashion.| Size: | Ht (max) 18cm, Width (max) 16cm, depth (max) 7.5cm |
