Victorian Cranberry and Uranium or Vaseline Glass Jug and a matching Bowl, circa 1880

Two matching pieces of Victorian Glass both with cranberry pink glass bodies finished with with horizontal machine threading and applied yellow glass forming the feet, the rim of the bowl and the handle of the jug. The combination of glass techniques used here is striking. Cranberry glass pieces with machine threading were produced in England in the late nineteenth century, a technique patented by Stevens and Williams in the 1880s.Here the bodies of the pieces are finished with yellow green uranium glass detail. Uranium glass was produced by adding uranium to the glass mix before melting for colouration amd became very popular in the nineteenth century, first marketed by James Powell’s Whitefriars glass company in London and then produced by other companies. Under ultraviolet light it fluoresces to bright green. In the 1930s it acquired the name 'vaseline' owing to its resemblance to the appearance of Vaseline-brand petroleum jelly as first produced at that time. Stevens and Williams may have been the producers of these pieces although other Victorian manufacturers have been suggested, including Richarson Glassworks. These pieces may well have been intended as an original set, perhaps cream and sugar for a tea service, and retain their decorative appeal today.
