LOT NUMBER 20
Mdina Glass Vase, signed and with maker’s label, late C20th
A studio glass vase the ovoid body below a short slightly outward flaring neck with a wide spreading rim, decorated overall in an abstract pattern of mottled green brown and blue, signed at the base ‘Mdina’ and with the original Mdina label. Mdina Glass was founded in the Maltese town of Mdina in 1968 by Michael Harris and Eric Dobson. The town had no history of glass making but the venture proved to be a success. Its wares, free formed organic glassware, often in colours inspired from the sea, sand, earth and sky, proved very popular with tourists visiting Malta. Michael Harris left Mdina in 1972 and formed a new company, Isle of Wight Studio Glass, on the Isle of Wight, UK, leaving Eric Dobson in charge. This pattern, known as ‘Tiger’ was introduced by Dobson in the mid 1970s and in common with the designs of his one time partner Michael Harris was manufactured in the years thereafter. The style of calligraphy of the mark, more tightly etched than on later pieces, implies that this vase is one of the earlier pieces made in the pattern and both the form and decoration here are extremely pleasing, making this a fine addition to a collection of Mdina ware .Size: | Ht 7cm, Width (max) 9.5cm, Base 5.5cm |
