LOT NUMBER 3
Pair of Chinese Dalian Glass Co. Ltd Vases, second half C20th
Distinctively Italian in style and resembling closely pieces made by the glassworks Vetreria Barbieri, based at or near Empoli, this pair of vases was, in fact, made in China in the mid to late twentieth century by the manufacturer ‘Dalian Glass Co. Ltd’, one of many glass factories on the Dalian headland, often known as the ‘crystal coast’. Just a few pieces still carry their factory label and an example of this from another vase is shown here (see image 9) which not only identifies the maker but also the pattern design used which was called ‘snowflakes’. Dalian Glass was not blown by hand but rather made using moulds and factory production techniques. But the quality is still there, leading many of their pieces to be confused with those made at Murano and the swirl decoration varies from piece to piece. With their shaped ovoid body and crimped rim set off by the multicoloured ‘trail’ decoration on a variegated yellow ground, this pair of vases is an excellent example of the Dalian Glass factory’s work, well able to stand comparison with the originals from which they took their inspiration.Size: | H 16 cm W approx 13 cm |
