LOT NUMBER 11
Art Deco green glass Orion Bowl by Lausitzer Glaswerke, Germany 1930s
A green glass circular bowl with a wavy rim and tripod feet made using the ‘pressed glass’ technique and decorated with bands of stylised leaves. The distinctive form here with its clear ‘Art Deco’ influence is usually attributed to the Lausitzer glassworks in Germany. Founded in 1889, the company still produces a wide range of drinking glasses today. The design of this bowl was known as ‘Orion’ and it appears in a variety of colours, this green tone perhaps being the most distinctive. The manufacturing technique is that of pressed glass in which molten glass is pressed into a mould with a plunger. This was the most common way to produce inexpensive glass from the middle of the 19th century onwards and enjoyed a great vogue in England and elsewhere in the 1920s and 1930s. The mould lines can be clearly seen in image 4 but the process allowed a high degree of definition as is evident here and the form and colouring of this bowl closely recall the decorative items of the Art Deco era.| Size: | Diam 22cm, Ht (max) 11cm |
