LOT NUMBER 3
Murano glass Polar Bear probably by Alfredo Barbini, second half C20th
A glass model of a polar bear modelled in semi abstract form standing leaning forwards on an irregular circular base, the body with gilt flecks and ‘sommerso’ effects at the head and tail, the details of the face picked out with modelled ears. This charming figure and others like it in a different colour wave was made in one of the glassworks at Murano, Italy. The design is usually held to be by Alfredo Barbini (1912-2007), one of Murano's leading artists in the twentieth century (see image 8). Born into a family with a long tradition in glass making, he worked for various of the Murano firms until forming his own business Vetreria Alfredo Barbini in 1950. His work was distinguished by a love of sculptural form and many of his pieces employ ‘gold leaf’ decoration. Both are seen here in this distinctive and attractive design which probably dates to the 1960s.| Size: | Ht (max) 10.5cm, Width (max) 15.2cm, Depth (max) 7.6cm |
