LOT NUMBER 18
Two satin glass Vases inscribed Zeebruge and signed H.Martin, Belgium, first half C20th
Two similar glass vases of slender beaker form tapering outwards towards the top and bottom, the base flat, the satin effect glass in tones of amber with a design in black and red of two boats to the front with the sea and rocks below and the lettering ‘Zeebruge’ above, the sides signed ‘H Martin’. Zeebruge is, of course, the well known Belgian port linked to Bruges by a canal and the decorator, Henri Martin, is known to have worked for the well known Belgian glassworks, Scailmont, located in Manage, a centre of glass making. Founded in 1901, Scailmont became known for moulded and satin-finish vases with art nouveau and art deco decorations, employing around 800 people in 1930 but eventually to close in 1970. Most of its pieces were signed and some had a paper label which could, of course, disappear in time. But Martin is also known to have worked for another factory in Manage, the Vauty studio, for whom Scailmont supplied blanks. These vases seem a bit modest for Scailmont but they are consistent with its style (see image 8 for another larger vase by Martin, again without a signature or label) so perhaps did originate there, possibly with a label now lost, although Martin’s other employer remains a possibility. Dating is probably to the 1920s or 1930s. Signed Henri Martin pieces do not appear very often so these two vases are an interesting sample of Belgian glass making from the years before the second World War.| Size: | Ht 14.8cm, Width (top) 3.5cm (base) 4cm |
