LOT NUMBER 17
Mdina glass globular bottle vase, Earthtones pattern, second half C20th
A small but heavy globular glass bottle with a ‘button’ rim decorated with a swirling design in tones of beige, brown and ochre. While not signed but quite possibly lacking an original paper label, the finish of the base and the stoutly blown glass have all the hallmarks of Mdina glass and the pattern has direct parallels with other pieces which are signed. It was called ‘earthtones’ and later just ‘earth’ and introduced in the mid 1970s, probably a design by Michael Harris who founded the glassworks at Mdina in Malta in company with Eric Dobson in 1968. Harris left in 1972 to set up Isle of Wight glass but his designs continued to be made and perhaps this piece dates to the 1980s. It is sometimes called a scent bottle, but, if so, would have needed a stopper and there few if any examples which have a clearly matching one. Perhaps just a decorative piece then and certainly a collectible example of this popular Mdina pattern.| Size: | Ht 9cm, Width (max) 7cm, Base 3.8cm |
