LOT NUMBER 16
Purple and white glass Jack in the Pulpit Vase, Elan Glass Studio, second half C20th
The distinctive form of this vase with its wide conical base narrowing towards the top and flaring outwards into a broad turned over leaf resembles the plant named ‘Jack in the Pulpit’ and was adopted by various glass manufacturers from the Art Nouveau period onwards. There are examples by Tiffany and Loetz and the shape was later produced at Murano and by some of the British glass studios. An example by Alum Bay Glass, Isle of Wight, can be seen elsewhere on this site. As the label indicates, this piece was made by the Elan Glass Studio in Wales but little is known now about this studio which was, perhaps, rather short lived. Although the stouter form suggests the 1960s or 1970s, this has to remain a guess but with its swirling designs and contrasting colourings of purple and white it is an attractive variation of the type.| Size: | Ht (max) 21cm, Width (max) 7cm, Depth (max) 7cm, Base 5.5cm |
