Murano style purple swirl glass Decanter with White Crystal label, second half C20th

A decanter and stopper, the lobed body of compressed bottle form rising to cylindrical neck below a flanged rim, the stopper with a ball shape knob, the purple glass with a swirling design and white trails, the stopper with fine mottling, a foil label to the base with a stylised gilt urn and the wording ‘WHITE CRISTAL’ ‘HAND MADE IN ITALY’.

Various pieces can be found with an identical label and some also have a second label with the wording (either in Italian or English and Italian) reading ‘Handmade in Italy’ ‘The artwork is done according to the technique of the masters MURANO’ (for an example see image 7). These were made by glassworks based in and around Naples and present themselves as true Murano works whereas the are more correctly to be regarded as ‘in the style of’. But there is still some artistry here and this decanter combines pleasing form with attractive decoration. Dating is probably to a period some time after the mid twentieth century.
