Pair of Bagley glass Andromeda figures with matched Equinox Posy Stands, 1930s
This is a pair of frosted uranium glass figurine statues of ladies matched with a pair of posy bowl stands in the same frosted glass colouring. Both were made by the firm Bagley Glass and the posy bowls appear in their catalogues with the number 3061. The figurines were apparently not sold separately but as part of a set with a matching bowl and stand under the name ‘Queen’s Choice’ with the pattern number 1122.Bagley Glass was established in Knottingly, England (south east of Leeds) in 1871. Bottle makers at first they branched out in 1912 and opened a department 'The Crystal Glass company' which made crystal and pressed glass. But it was for the latter that Bagley were to become famous and they became the biggest manufacturer of pressed glass in England in the years before and after the war. Their designs reflect the Art Deco style in imaginative recreations which were affordable for the mass market.
The green ‘uranium’ glass used for the figurines here glows green under ultra violet light and was often used by British glass manufacturers in the 1930s. The correct matching items for the figurines can be seen in image 11 (Wakefield Council Museum Collection) but the stands used here are an equally appropriate accompaniment perhaps acting as even more of an enhancement. Dating of both is most likely to the 1930s.
