Pink pressed glass shallow Bowl, probably Walther & Söhne, Germany, 1930s
A shallow bowl of near circular form with rounded straight edge sides divided into sixteen panels, eight large with a near frosted surface and eight small in clear glass, the centre of the interior with a stylised floral medallion and the rim wavy edged and notched, the pink coloured glass press moulded. The design, pattern and technique here all point to the German manufacturer Walther & Söhne, or more correctly August Walther & Söhne AG, founded by August Walther in 1888. In 1932, the firm merged with Saxonian glass and began producing a wide range of Art Deco inspired pieces including centrepieces, figurines, bowls and vases. Very similar pieces to the one here, if not the identical piece itself, can be seen in a catalogue from 1937. After the war, the firm was nationalised and was renamed VEB Sachsenglas, continuing production of its Art Deco designs until its closure in 1990.
The influence of the Art Deco style can clearly be seen here and dating is most likely to the 1930s but, as indicated above, this model may also have continued in production in the years following.
