Sommerso style glass Ashtray Bowl with label, Romania 1960s/1970s

A heavy glass ashtray bowl of rounded triangular form with three indented sections, the base flat and the glass with layering of red and light green, the top with a round paper label reading ‘Made in Roumania’. While the factory cannot be identified, the origin of this piece is certain and the spelling of Romania ‘Roumania’ dates it to before the mid 1970s when the English spelling of ‘Romania’ was altered to conform with the standard spelling of that country’s name used elsewhere and by Romanians themselves. Similar pieces without the label are often inaccurately described as ‘Murano’ but they do share some similarity with their Italian counterparts in that different layers of coloured glass are juxtaposed in a loose imitation of the ‘sommerso’ style perfected by the Murano glassmakers. But there is no second best here and the design and quality of workmanship are easily appreciated.
