Teal glass Centrepiece, probably Empoli, mid C20th

A footed bowl or centrepiece the body of lobed compressed globular form with graduated and stepped circular sections below a lightly crimped rim, the stem in twisted glass above a broad spreading foot, the body and foot in teal and the stem in clear glass.

These pieces are commonly attributed to the glassworks at Empoli in Tuscany, Italy. An example can be seen in the catalogue of the American dealership ‘Clay + Coda’ where it is described as a ‘Carnival Tent Candy Dish’ and is shown with its original cover which is missing here (see image 7). Empoli pieces were famous for their imaginative forms and striking colours which is certainly consistent with the present example. Production of glasswares continues there today but this piece probably dates to the mid twentieth century and does not seem to be currently available from the contemporary manufacturers.
