Abstract decoration vase, possibly Marzi & Remy, Model No 1062/26, second half C20th
A vase of slender tapering form, the body rounded towards the short concave foot, glazed overall in speckled white with abstract ‘flashes’, black ground with mustard incised decoration, the interior glazed yellow and the base brown with raised modelled numbers ‘1062/26’.There are no markings here apart from the model number and size (seemingly one centimetre out) but the form and decoration of this vase resemble pieces by the less well known producers of West German ceramics, Marzi & Remy, whose pieces are rarely marked with anything other than the model number and size. Anton Marzi and Simon Peter Remy founded their firm in the Westerwald town of Höhr in 1879, soon producing both ceramic and pewter items. The business expanded and became one of Germnay’s leading stoneware producers. In 1927 the company was taken over by Werner Remy (Simon Peter Remy's son) and Otto Buhler (Anton Marzi’s son in law) and production continued with Otto Buhler being succeeded by his son, Otto, and his grandson, Otto George, until 1994 when the factory was closed. In their later years, Marzi and Remy produced a wide range of modernist designs of which this vase could well be an example. Dating would probably be to the 1970s or 1980s.
